EX-PRISONERS THINK THEY WILL RETURN

“What a s**t show, where am I supposed to live now?” is what one man who was released from prison this week told us!

Approximately 1,750 individuals were scheduled for release this week to alleviate overcrowding and prevent a total collapse of the criminal justice system, despite warnings that the scheme might be “risky” and that some reoffending is “inevitable.”

While many are pleased to be released early, despite having no place to go, no employment, or plans, the man we spoke to is almost certain he will be recalled due to the conditions attached to his reduced sentence.

We work with as many at-risk individuals as possible and run a mentoring program for those throughout the Northwest once they exit the prison gates. Unfortunately, thousands more need our support.

Statistics show that approximately 48% of adults released from custody reoffend within a year, over 60% of those released require housing support, and 75% need assistance with employment and reintegration into society. Yet, funding and support are increasingly difficult to secure, making it challenging to help those in need.

We are uncertain about the next 3 months, let alone the next 12 months, but we hope to be in a position to meet the rising demand.

Let us know what you think!
