Summer should be a time of opportunity.
A time for young people to explore their communities, spend time with friends, take part in activities and create positive memories. Yet for many families, the cost of travel, meals and days out can become a significant barrier.
Recent announcements around free bus travel for under-16s and reduced costs for some attractions and activities have the potential to make a meaningful difference for families across Greater Manchester and beyond.
While these changes may seem simple on the surface, affordable transport can open doors to opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. Whether it’s attending a sports session, visiting a local attraction, spending time in a park, meeting friends, volunteering, or accessing support services, the ability to travel independently can have a positive impact on a young person’s confidence, wellbeing and social connection.
At Homeless House CIC, we regularly see how financial pressures can limit opportunities for young people and families. Small reductions in everyday costs can help families redirect resources towards essentials while still allowing children and young people to participate in activities that support their development and wellbeing.
Community participation should not depend on a family’s financial situation.
Every young person deserves the opportunity to learn, explore, connect and enjoy the communities they are part of.
As we move into the summer months, we welcome any initiative that helps remove barriers, increase accessibility and create more opportunities for young people to thrive.
Because when young people can access their communities, everyone benefits.
Stronger connections. Greater confidence. More opportunities.
And ultimately, stronger communities.
