Nitazenes: The Hidden Risk More People Need to Know About

At Homeless House CIC, raising awareness can be just as important as providing direct support.

Many of the challenges facing vulnerable people today are not always visible. Some emerge quietly, spread quickly and can have devastating consequences before communities fully understand the risks.

Nitazenes are one of those risks.

Although many people may never have heard of them, Nitazenes are a group of highly potent synthetic opioids that have been increasingly identified across the UK. In some cases, they can be significantly stronger than fentanyl, making them particularly dangerous even in very small quantities.

One of the biggest concerns is that people often do not know they have been exposed to them.

Nitazenes have been found mixed with or sold as other substances, meaning individuals may unknowingly consume them. Because they cannot be identified by sight, smell or taste alone, the risk of accidental overdose is significantly increased.

This is why awareness matters.

Knowledge helps people make informed decisions, recognise potential dangers and look out for those around them. Conversations about substance-related harm can be uncomfortable, but they can also save lives.

As an organisation working closely with communities across Greater Manchester, we believe education plays a vital role in prevention. Sharing accurate information helps individuals, families, youth workers, support services and community organisations better understand emerging risks and respond appropriately.

The purpose of this awareness campaign is not to create fear.

It is to encourage understanding.

To encourage conversations.

And to remind people that looking out for one another has never been more important.

If you work with young people, support vulnerable individuals, or simply want to stay informed about emerging community risks, taking the time to learn about Nitazenes could make a real difference.

Awareness saves lives! Conversations save lives! Communities looking out for each other save lives – and we are here for it all!
